Get a Budget Dedicated Server
So you’ve found a budget dedicated server, now what? That’s right, there is only one main task and that is making your best available. The first thing you need to do is go through your network to see if there are any third party websites you can use. The reason for this is because sometimes third party sites will pop up a “do not contact” message if they’re trying to exploit your server and there are some files that you’ll need to be safe from intrusion.
Then you need to make sure you have a backup server of all your data so that you can restore anything you may lose. You will also need to verify that the hosting company has a backup solution. You will also need to verify that you have the correct physical IP address. If you do not have this it will also be easy for your provider to restrict you and not allow you to log in again. A good hosting company will also provide you with unlimited disk space and bandwidth.
Now what? The first thing you’ll want to do is set up a user account with the hosting company. This account is where you can get the administrative panel for the budget dedicated server. You will have the power to install updates and security programs, which are critical to the survival of your system. Now, if you have a router with the right settings, you’ll have the power to forward incoming connections.
If you are not using a router, you will want to set up DNS servers for external servers, and DNS servers for internal systems. All systems should have their own IP address. A very good start would be to setup both internal and external DNS servers. When your budget dedicated server is running properly, you should be able to see a number of pages open on your website, like the login page, the shopping cart and the settings for the site.
So now you have the hardware up and running and it’s time to get things online. You will want to install phpMyAdmin which is a great solution to making web based administration easier. Also, you need to install MySQL, the database used for databases. If you do not have a database of your own, it may be possible to use Microsoft Access database, if you are using Linux or Windows.
Now all you need to do is set up your database and run phpMyAdmin, your html and admin panel, and enable your web browser. After that, set up your main website and a sub-page. Keep the graphics nice and simple and have the admin page admin set up to send email to you. Some hosting companies give you the option of setting up email alerts and even VPNs, which allow you to access your servers over the internet.
Remember that the solution to this dilemma is actually not as difficult as it may seem and that is why it is a lot easier to maintain a virtual private server than a dedicated server. It is usually free and easy to set up and then you can be on your way to a long healthy life without needing an expensive dedicated server.
